The best clothes for newborn photos are comfortable, simple and coordinated without being identical. Soft neutrals and gentle layers work well because they keep the attention on your baby, your faces and the way your family connects.
You do not need to buy a completely new wardrobe or dress everyone in matching white. Start with one outfit you feel good in, choose two or three colours that work together, and build the rest of the family around them.
At Sweetlife Photography, we help families coordinate their clothing before their session at our North Lakes studio. This guide will help you narrow down your options for baby, parents and siblings.
The quick answer: keep the palette simple
A small colour palette makes family photographs feel connected without looking overly matched. Choose two or three colours and repeat them gently across the family.
Easy combinations include:
- ivory, oatmeal and soft tan
- cream, sage and warm brown
- white, soft grey and muted blue
- beige, dusty rose and gentle green
- charcoal, black and soft grey for a stronger monochrome look
Neutral does not have to mean pale. Darker clothing can look clean and timeless when the whole family follows the same direction. The main aim is to avoid several strong colours competing for attention in one photograph.
Before the session, place everyone’s clothes together on a bed or the floor and take a photo. This makes it easier to spot one item that feels too bright, too busy or unrelated to the rest.
What should mum wear for newborn photos?
Choose something that feels comfortable on your body now. Newborn photographs are often taken while you are still recovering, feeding frequently and adjusting to life with your baby. Your outfit should work for you, not give you another thing to manage.
Good options may include:
- a soft dress with room to move
- a relaxed blouse with trousers or a skirt
- a plain knit or cardigan over a simple top
- a long dress or skirt that feels comfortable when sitting
- a plain top in cream, white, beige, grey or another muted colour
There is no requirement to hide your postpartum body or dress more formally than you normally would. Choose a neckline, sleeve length and shape that you already know you like. If you plan to feed during the session, clothing with practical access can make the day easier.
Bring one spare top if you can. Newborns are unpredictable, and a quick change is much less stressful than worrying about a small spill.
What should dad or a partner wear?
Dad or a partner does not need to match your outfit exactly. A plain T-shirt, polo, knit, linen shirt or simple button-up can all photograph well.
Look for:
- solid colours
- soft texture rather than a large print
- a comfortable fit
- a colour that appears elsewhere in the family palette
For example, if mum is wearing a cream dress, a partner might wear a soft grey shirt with neutral trousers. If the family is using deeper tones, charcoal, black or muted navy can work well.
Avoid large logos, slogans and strong checks. These details can pull attention away from your baby, especially in close parent-and-baby portraits.

What should siblings wear?
Dress siblings as part of the same family palette, but let their outfits suit their age and personality. They do not need identical clothes.
Simple dresses, shirts, knits, polos and plain tops tend to work well. Cotton, linen and soft knitted textures can add interest without making the photograph feel busy.
For younger children, comfort matters more than creating a perfect outfit. Choose clothes they can sit, cuddle and move in without constant adjustment. If a child strongly dislikes an item at home, the studio is unlikely to change their mind.
A useful approach is to allow one gentle pattern for a sibling, then keep everyone else in solid colours. Pack a spare outfit for young children if possible.
Parent and sibling photographs are available in selected Sweetlife collections. Let us know who will attend when you enquire so we can help you choose the right session and plan the clothing together.
What should your newborn wear?
Your baby does not need several complete outfits. Newborn portraits often use simple wraps, small outfits or carefully chosen props so the baby remains the focus.
Sweetlife’s studio is equipped with wraps, outfits and props. If you would like to include a particular colour, sentimental outfit, blanket or family item, tell us before the session so we can plan how it may fit with the rest of the gallery.
Dress your baby for the trip to the studio in something comfortable and easy to remove. Avoid tight socks, waistbands or accessories immediately before the session if they are likely to leave marks on the skin.
Do not worry if your baby does not fit a planned outfit or needs a different approach on the day. We can adjust the session around your baby’s size, comfort and alertness.
Can we bring a sentimental outfit or blanket?
Yes. A handmade blanket, gifted outfit or small family heirloom can make a portrait more personal.
Choose one or two meaningful items rather than bringing a large collection. This gives us time to photograph them thoughtfully while keeping the overall session calm.
Send a photo before the session if the item has a strong colour or pattern. We can consider the background, wrap and family clothing together instead of making those decisions after you arrive.
Clothes that can be harder to photograph
You do not need to follow strict rules, but the following items can draw attention away from faces:
- large brand logos or slogans
- neon colours
- very small, high-contrast patterns
- several unrelated prints in one family group
- uncomfortable clothing that needs constant adjustment
- bulky items in pockets
Check hair ties, watches and fitness bands before family portraits as well. Keep them if they are part of your everyday style, or remove them before the session if you do not want them in the final images.
What if your family loves colour?
You can still use colour. Choose one main colour and support it with quieter tones.
For example, a muted blue dress could be paired with cream, grey and soft denim. A dusty rose outfit could sit beside oatmeal, warm white and tan. Colour works best when it feels deliberate rather than appearing once in a single bright item.
If you have already chosen a colourful outfit you love, send us a photo. We can help you work out what the rest of the family could wear around it.
A simple way to plan everyone’s outfits
1. Choose one parent’s outfit first
Start with the person who finds clothing decisions hardest or has the fewest suitable options. It is easier to coordinate other family members around one confirmed outfit.
2. Pick two or three colours from that outfit
Use those colours as a guide, not a uniform. Mix slightly different shades and textures so the result feels natural.
3. Add siblings and your partner
Look for pieces they already own before buying anything new. Check comfort, fit and how easily young children can move.
4. Take one photo of everything together
Send the photo to Sweetlife if you would like a second opinion. We can help identify anything that may compete with the planned studio styling.
5. Pack a small backup
Bring one spare parent top and a backup outfit for young siblings. You do not need a suitcase of options.
What to pack for clothing changes
Keep the clothing bag small and easy to reach. Consider bringing:
- one complete outfit for each parent and sibling
- one spare parent top
- one backup outfit for a young sibling
- any sentimental baby item discussed before the session
- a bag for clothing that becomes wet or marked
Nappies, wipes, feeding supplies and your baby’s usual comforts belong in a separate, easy-to-access bag. For a broader preparation checklist, see Getting Ready for Your Baby’s Photoshoot.
Frequently asked questions
Do we all need to wear white?
No. White and cream can look beautiful, but they are not the only options. Soft earth tones, grey, muted blue, sage, charcoal and black can also work. Coordination matters more than choosing one specific colour.
Should parents and siblings wear matching outfits?
No. Choose clothes that share a palette or level of formality without making everyone identical. Similar tones and simple shapes are usually enough.
Can we wear black for newborn photos?
Yes. Black can create a clean, close and more graphic family portrait. It works best when the other outfits and the planned background support the same direction.
Does our baby need a special outfit?
Not necessarily. Sweetlife has wraps, outfits and props at the studio. If you want to include a personal outfit or blanket, send us a photo before the session so we can plan it with the rest of your gallery.
What if we cannot decide between two outfits?
Photograph both options in natural light and send them to us before the session. We can help you choose based on the planned background, family combination and overall look.
Can parents and siblings join the newborn session?
Parent and sibling photographs are available in selected collections. Check the current inclusions on our Pricing page and tell us who will attend when you enquire.
Plan a newborn session that feels like your family
Your clothing should support the photograph, not become the main subject. Choose pieces that feel comfortable, keep the palette connected and leave room for your family to hold and enjoy your baby.
You can browse our newborn and baby gallery, learn about newborn and older newborn photography in Brisbane and North Lakes, or get in touch with photos of your outfit options.
When you enquire, tell us your baby’s age or due date and whether parents or siblings will be photographed. We will help you plan a simple, coordinated look before the session.
